Sound 4 Sound Advice Your Hearing Health Newsletter from County Hearing & Balance Does Diabetes Cause Hearing Loss? In a study by the National Institute of Health, researchers found that hearing loss was twice as common in adults suffering from diabetes compared to those without diabetes, and those with pre-diabetes have a 30 percent higher rate of hearing loss compared with people with normal blood glucose. Researchers conducted hearing tests of a group of adults and measured their ability to hear across various frequencies. Hearing loss in low to mid-frequency sounds was more evident in 21% of 399 adults with diabetes, versus 9% in 4741 adults without diabetes. The rate for hearing loss was even greater for the high frequency sounds, 549% in those with Diabetes compared to 32% in those without the disease. While research has not drawn firm conclusions about the relationship, one theory is that Diabetes damages the blood circulation of the nerves and blood vessels of the inner ear, which can then cause permanent hearing loss. This can result in a person missing the softer speech sounds that provide clarity. Listening to someone at a distance or listening in a noisy social situation may also be affected.
